Air pollution is recognized as the most alarming problem that occurs around the world because of its harmful impact on health and the environment. In other words, it means the contamination of the air through harmful substances into the earth’s atmosphere where it can cause difficult for living things to survive. It may not always be visible, but it can be deadly. Hence, it is also known as an invisible, silent killer that is spreading like a bushfire affecting the world.
Causes of air pollution
- Excessive burning of fossil fuels
One of the main causes is the excessive burning of fuels such as coal, petroleum and natural gas. All use of these fossil fuels is leading the world to disastrous results. It can release hazardous gases like nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide, Sulphur and even carbon monoxide in the air. And therefore, in the following years, it may cause serious health issues for the next generations.
- Heavy dumping
Heavy dumping has become a pandemic issue nowadays. As a matter of fact, the chemicals and non-biodegradable materials in the waste can affect the physical environment agriculture and wildlife. They can even be affected by the heavy dumping of waste. Consequently, it prevents animals and individual from enjoying a clean and green environment.
- Agricultural activities
Agriculture brought enormous prosperity but on the other hand, it also has its negative aspects. Agriculture’s major sources of air pollution include livestock, producing methane, ammonia and the burning of agricultural waste. Emissions of methane lead to ground-level ozone production which causes asthma and other respiratory diseases.
Consequences of air pollution
- Health problems
Therefore, the health problems are many and major. One of the deadliest health issues is lung disease, cancer and even stroke. Inflammation of blood vessels, asthma problem can also be the result of air pollution. Hence, there is risk involved in both short and long-term exposure to contaminated air. Short-term exposure to polluted air has been reported to have an acute effect on people while chronic sickness comes from long-term exposure to poor quality. However, the polluted air can aggravate the condition of people who reside in areas that have the highest pollution and unfortunately it can cause millions of deaths every year.
- Destruction of environment
Air pollution is like a killing machine which slowly but surely destroys not only human beings but also the environment. However, once the environment is affected, the flora and fauna are subsequently exposed to all types of external agents and diseases that can end up destroying them.
- Accelerated global warming
It refers to the warming up of the earth’s surface and lower atmosphere. The phenomenon tends to intensify with an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Furthermore, this creates an imbalance in the composition of gases that can become a threat to the earth. It is the main source for climate change and the depletion of the Ozone layer.
Solutions for air pollution
Conserve energy – As we are all aware, a large amount of fossil fuel is burnt in order to produce electricity. To reduce the amount, it is better to act responsibly through simple actions. You may switch off the light immediately after use for instance.
Clean energy consumption – It is high time to use clean air technology such as solar, wind and even geothermal. The important thing is that stakeholders themselves provide and encourage the public to install and use solar panels.
Hybrid/ Electric Transport – There are innovative examples of hybrid and electric cars that works on some form of electric batteries. They do not release harmful substances and as such, greatly contributes to the safeguard of the planet.
Create your green space – It is important to value your garden. Plant more trees. They clean the air and provide more oxygen. They even embellish your surroundings and goes a long way in improving the quality of life. You could even use indoor plants like Benzene or Formaldehyde that have the ability to remove pollutants.
Do you wish to see a difference in society? We can make a change through mere small acts of kindness. They contribute to the fight against pollution. Still, the decision of safeguard the environment should be made quickly and this rests squarely upon our shoulders. If we respect mother nature, the benefits would be exponential. Our survival is entirely dependent on it.
